Topol alternatives: who should leave, who should stay, and where to go

By Mara Levin · Updated October 7, 2026 · Vendor pages and prices checked that day

Topol (topol.io) sells two things on one pricing page: an email editor you use yourself, from $10 a month, and an editor plugin you embed in your own product, from $70. It is one of the cheapest unmetered builders around, so people rarely leave on price. They leave because there is no free tier, because the team plan stops at three seats without roles, or because they want approvals or an editor with sending built in. This page covers each case.

The short answer

Someone who wants a free tier to start on should try Stripo Free or Beefree Starter, knowing both meter exports. A team that needs review and approvals should price Beefree Business. A designer who likes AI-drafted layouts should look at Postcards. A developer who wants the template as code can use MJML, since Topol itself compiles through it. For most solo users, staying is cheaper.

What Topol charges, in two sentences

The pricing page lists PRO at $10 a month and Team at $15 for three members on one tab, and plugin plans of Startup $70, Expansion $140 and Business $300 on the other. The plugin plans count prepaid users, with extra users billed at $1.60, $1.40 and $0.70.

Why people leave

  • There is a trial, not a free plan. The PRO tab offers a free trial with every PRO feature unlocked, and the screenshot shows a 14-day free trial banner. Afterwards you pay $10. For a student or a hobbyist, a $0 plan is a different proposition.
  • Team stops at three members, with no roles. Team is $15 with 3 team members, then "Additional team member from $10/month". It adds shared templates plus comments and mentions. User roles and permissions are listed only under the plugin's Business plan.
  • Image hosting has a ceiling. PRO lists 50GB of image hosting traffic included. A high-volume newsletter whose images are served from Topol's host should read how that traffic is counted.
  • It is a builder, not a platform. Topol pushes finished templates to your ESP, and sends nothing itself. If you want editor and sending in one account, you need a different kind of product.
  • Plugin costs grow with users. Embedding the editor is priced on prepaid users, so a growing customer base moves you from $70 to $140 to $300 and past it.

The alternatives, with prices

Builder Free tier Paid prices What changes versus Topol
StripoFree: 2 members, 4 exports a monthBasic $20, Medium $45, Pro $125Real free tier, but exports are metered on every plan (4, 50, 300 and 4,000 a month)

Prices from Stripo, Beefree, Postcards and Mailchimp. Stripo's page notes that its Free plan is for building templates, not for exporting them to an ESP.

What it costs at one, three and ten people

  • One person. Topol PRO is $10, which is $120 a year. Stripo Basic is $20, Postcards Plus $16 and Beefree Professional $30.
  • Three people. Topol Team is $15. Postcards Pro is $24 with 3 teammates included, Stripo Medium is $45 for 3 members and 300 exports a month, and Beefree Professional only pairs you with one other seat.
  • Ten people. Topol Team at $15 plus 7 extra members is $15 + 7 x $10 = $85 at the minimum rate. Stripo Pro lists 10 members and 4,000 exports for $125. The Topol arithmetic uses the page's "from $10" rate as a floor, so confirm the per-member price before relying on it.

On those numbers Topol is the cheapest at every size, so the real question is features, not cost. The three groups who most justify leaving are those who need approvals, a free start or a different shape of product.

Who should switch to what

A student or someone testing the waters. Start on a free tier. Stripo Free gives 2 members and 4 exports a month; the pricing page says it suits building more than exporting. Beefree Starter allows 6 exports. When you outgrow it, Topol PRO is the cheapest next step. Topol vs Stripo compares those first paid tiers.

A team that needs approvals and brand locks. Beefree Business at $160 lists built-in approval workflows, advanced brand controls and 2 organized workspaces, which Topol's PRO and Team plans do not. See Beefree alternatives before you commit, and Stripo vs BEE Free for the middle tier.

A designer who wants a layout drafted for them. Postcards Plus at $16 lists 5,000 AI credits a month and Pro at $24 lists 10,000. Topol PRO also includes its AI assistant and chat with no credits, so test both on the same brief. Postcards vs Stripo covers that product.

A product team that embeds the plugin. The close competitor is Unlayer, which starts at $250. Our Unlayer alternatives page works out when Topol's $70 to $300 range beats it and when it does not.

A developer. Topol's page says templates compile through the open MJML standard, so a team that outgrows the visual editor can write MJML directly. MJML alternatives and MJML vs React Email cover the code route.

The option nobody lists: keep the sender, swap the builder

Topol pushes templates to your ESP in one click on every paid plan, according to its page, but a different builder can feed the same ESP. Nothing about your contacts, automations or sending domain changes when you replace a builder. Check that the new tool lists your ESP as an export target, as Postcards does for Mailchimp, HubSpot, Klaviyo, SendGrid, SendPulse, Brevo, Constant Contact and Zoho Campaigns, or be ready to paste HTML by hand.

What to save before you leave

  1. HTML of every live template. PRO lists unlimited HTML exports, so there is no reason to skip any. Do them all in one sitting.
  2. Image originals. Download the source files and check that the exported HTML's image URLs will not stop working when the account closes.
  3. Saved blocks and custom HTML blocks. They live in your Topol library. Export an email that uses each and rebuild the block in the new tool.
  4. Merge tags and display conditions. Your page lists smart merge tags that recognize your ESP's own tags, and if/else display conditions. Write down the rules, since the new builder may not carry them over.
  5. Version history. Topol keeps every save forever on PRO. If a client may ask what an email looked like in March, export that version first.

How the move goes

Rebuild your five most-used master templates first and send tests to Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail inboxes of your own. Pause the Topol subscription only after one live campaign has gone out from the new tool without edits to the HTML. Since the trial lets you keep what you build, a new builder's trial is a safe place to rehearse.

Stay if…

  • You are a solo designer or a trio, and unmetered exports at $10 or $15 are exactly what you want.
  • You do not need approvals, roles or a free plan.
  • You embed the plugin and the user count is under a few hundred.

FAQ

Does Topol have a free plan?

No standing free plan. Its pricing page offers a free trial with every PRO feature unlocked, and says the template you build during the trial stays yours to keep and export. After that, PRO is $10 a month. If a free tier matters, Stripo (4 exports a month), Postcards Start (5) and Beefree Starter (6) each have one, with export caps.

Is the plugin plan the same as PRO?

No. The page has two tabs. Plugin pricing, at $70, $140 and $300 a month, is for putting Topol's editor inside your own product and counts prepaid users. PRO pricing, $10 for one person and $15 for a team of three, is for using Topol's own editor yourself. They are separate subscriptions with different feature lists.

What is the cheapest unmetered alternative for one person?

On the pages read for this guide, Topol PRO at $10 is already the cheapest paid builder that lists unlimited HTML exports. Stripo Basic at $20 gives 50 exports a month, Postcards Plus at $16 gives 20 and Beefree Professional at $30 is unmetered but is the dearest of the four. Moving away from Topol for price alone rarely saves money.

Will my emails break if I cancel?

Exported HTML is yours and keeps working, but check where its images live. Topol's page says it hosts uploaded images, with 50GB of data traffic included, so an email that points at Topol-hosted image URLs depends on that account staying open. Download the originals and re-host them before cancelling.
